Reviews about Tanners Restaurant
- 5 / 5By Casa Mia Guest House Plymouthone of our favourite places for a leisurely lunch at excellent price.January 04, 2017
- 2 / 5By A Google UserThis is just the kind of restaurent which winds me up.
It starts with the need to pay a deposit before you are able to book. This sets the scene for exclusivity and something special. The illusion is carried on as you arrive at the historic building, furnished and staffed to a high standard.
The staff appear to go out of their way to cater for your every need, but you always have the feeling it's because they have to, rather than a natural love of the job, which you can experience in many 'lesser' establishments.
The menu arrives with a 'tasting menu' section, which we will always choose if it looks appealing. A quick scan shows it's just a selection of items from the main menu with a couple of extras thrown in. More like a set menu for a price than a true 'tasting menu'.
So we go for a la carte.
My starter is the Ballotine of salmon, cauliflower and almonds. It's not a good start. The whole thing is completely and utterly tasteless. There is honestly no discernible taste whatsoever to this dish. My dining colleagues agree. What one would have to do to such beautifully presented salmon to take away all its flavour is beyond me.
Let's hope the main has something I can taste. It's fish again, but I am an optimist. It arrives beautifully presented again and has some flavour, but nothing better than I can get from a freezer packet.
My wife is being kinder about her courses as she doesn't want to spoil her Dad's birthday, which is why we are here. We decide to share the dark chocolate moelleux with persimmon sorbet. We should have called by the supermarket instead and picked up a Gu dessert which is far better and a little less than £7-95.
Don't get me wrong, I am very happy to pay lots of money for good food. I've eaten at the Fat Duck and it was worth every penny.
But these places which charge you a fortune for very, very average tasting food, dressed up in pretentious surroundings to confuse the average persons' senses into believing it's rather special are just a con' trick.
I know most of the other reviews are great, but based on my objective experience, we either had a bad night or the others forgot to notice the taste does not live up to the presentation.
Actually, I've also just noticed the review of the 27/6/11. My wife was also very sick 24 hours later - up all night vomiting. We put it down to something else, but now I'm wondering.....December 03, 2016 - 5 / 5By Jon AndersonA fine dining restaurant, in an amazing location, everything you would expect. comfortable ante room, they seat you just before the food is ready, waiters are attentive but not in your face and the food is excellentJuly 09, 2016
